Brian Welman started riding horses at a young age. As a young child Brian rode horses in open shows and enjoyed the experiences. Brian’s path to reining was influenced as a teenager when he attended a Larry Kasten clinic. At the clinic Larry spoke to Brian about the Equine program offered at the University of Wisconsin. Brian attended the University and continued riding and learning more about the horse industry.

In 1983 Brian went to work for one of the top reining horse trainers in the industry, Tim McQuay. Working as an assistant for Tim McQuay gave Brian fantastic opportunities. Brian gained tremendous knowledge working for McQuay stables, as well as having the opportunity to ride top horses and work with some of the leaders in the reining horse industry. After 5 years under Tim’s tutelage Brian Welman decided to go out on his own.

Brian worked for a few months in Italy as he waited for a facility in River Falls, Wisconsin to be made ready for him to start his own training program.  Brian worked in River Falls for 14 years out of a facility that was originally owned by Jennifer Easton.  Easton is probably best known as the co owner of Hollywood Dun It.

In 2002 Welman moved his training business to Goodwin Stables in Hasting, Minnesota. Currently Goodwin Stables is home to Brian Welman Training Center. To see more about Goodwin Stables, the facility that Brian Welman trains out of, click here.

Great Horses

Brian has ridden great horses in his career and has also sold several great horses to some of the reining horse industry’s “heavy hitters”. Brian continues to ride, train and sell truly great horses.

Welman rode Kaliflower, a daughter of Kaliman, to his first NRHA world title in 1985 when he was awarded the NRHA Limited Open Reserve World Championship. Brian also won the Superstakes at the All American Congress on Kaliflower.

Major Find, a daughter of Major Bonanza, was owned by Bob and Linda Hamilton and Brian Welman rode this mare to great success. Brian rode Major Find at the 1986 NRHA futurity and took home over $13,000 in earnings at that one show.

Doc O Dan was another great horse that Brian had the opportunity to ride in the late 1980’s. Doc O Dan was the 1989 NRHA Non Pro Reserve Champion for Darlyn Lilly.  Doc O Dan was later sold to Rebecca Farmer and won the reining at the AQHA Youth World Championship Show along with many other titles.

Tidy Jac

In 1989 Brian rode Ms Tidy Jac, the dam of Topgun Whiz, to win the Jr. Reining at the All American Congress.

In 1991 and 1992 Brian continued on with his successful show career to ride Sally Brown’s A Little Shady Jac to take home multiple awards and well over $16,000 in prize money.

In 1997 Brian assisted Heather Duncan, daughter of Jennifer Easton, to take home 2 NRHA World Titles in Limited Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro along with many other year end awards for the stallion Sun Up Gun.

1997 proved to be a “World Class” year for Welman as he took home the Paint Horse Senior Reserve World Championship award on Cutters Classic.

Welman rode and trained Dun Kist The Sky and after showing this talented horse at an early futurity Brian sold her to Kelle Smith. Dun Kist The Sky was Kelle’s 2000 Futurity entry and Kelle placed at both the 2000 Congress Futurity and NRHA Futurity on this attractive buckskin.

Boogernic, a stud owned by Jennifer Easton, and Brian made a great team as they won 11 Bronze trophies together. Brian coached Jennifer Easton on Boogernic, and Jennifer took home her first Bronze trophy on her talented stud.

Furthermore, this special team of Welman and Boogernic were Silver Medalists at the FEI Futures in Gladstone and won the Senior Reining at the All American Congress.

Boogerchex

Welman obviously had a superb rapport with Boogernic and continued his success with Boogernic’s progeny, as he went on to win the Extravaganza on Boogachex, a son of Boogernic. Shown at right is Boogerchex with Welman.

Welman won the Montana Futurity in 2003 on Boogerific, also a son of Boogernic. This talented horse was later sold to Bob Avila.

Hanging With The Doc

Hanging With The Doc proved to be a special horse in Welman’s career also. Hanging With The Doc was purchased for Nicole Dryden, a young Non Pro client. Dryden took home the 2005 NRBC Limited Non Pro Championship under the guidance of Brian Welman. She was a 2006 World Show finalist and later Deb Dryden, Nicole’s mom, won the North Central Rookie Saddle Series on Hanging With The Doc.

Goldie

Brennas Golden Dunnit, a son of Hollywood Dun It, and Welman first teamed up in 2005. In 2006 these two athletes were a team that was tough to beat. The team started the year off by earning over 50 AQHA reining points at the Pre-Denver Show and they were the FEI Reserve Open Champions. Again, Welman and “Goldie” were Open Reserve Champions at the 2006 NRBC. Later in 2006 their Championship winning streak continued as they took home top honors and were named the Open Champions at the NRHA Derby Show, Tulsa Classic, NRHA Congress, and NRHA Futurity Show, to name just a few of the shows that this team took home the prestigious title of Open Champion.

Ps & Qs

In 2007 Welman won the $40,000.00 added Pure Bred Reining Futurity on Minding Ps And Qs and was 3rd in the $70,000.00 added Half Arabian Reining Futurity on TR Texas T for owner RJ Ames.

Frye in the Sky

2008 proved to be another banner year as Brian captured top honors in Scottsdale by winning both the Pure Bred Arabian Open Futurity on Fyre In The Skye (photo to right of Welman and Fyre In The Skye) and the Half Arabian Open Futurity on TR Texas T again for owner RJ Ames.

Brian Welman has won the North Central Saddle Circuit every year since 1990 except for two years. This is a mind boggling 15 saddles out of a possible 17 saddles. Brian is proud of this accomplishment and enjoys the title of North Central Open Saddle Winner with such industry greats as Jeff Kasten and Kim Diercks.

With close to $350,000 in earnings, Brian has consistently been in the winner’s circle and attributes his great success to listening to the horse, working with his owners and riders to put the horse in a position to win and a lot of hard work and wet saddle pads.

Brian has been an NRHA judge since 1988 and has judged such prominent events as the NRHA Futurity, NRHA Derby, NRBC and the Australian Reining Futurity.
